ORC’s Health Contract Win
June 14 2002

Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) has just been awarded another contract in the growing US market for web-based public sector databases. The contract represents a $4 million, multi-year award to manage the registration, report processing and quality assurance functions for a state health organisation.

The establishment in question is the Maryland Cancer Registry (MCR) for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). Like similar organisations in every US state, the MCR acts as the central repository for tracking new cases of cancer at the state level. Over 200 Maryland facilities, including hospitals, free-standing laboratories, radiation therapy centres, ambulatory care and surgery centres and physicians report to the MCR each year.

Under the new contract, ORC will provide data collection, processing, quality assurance and dual-database systems development and management. Research and public health professionals can also use the MCR data to advance cancer control goals and new research strategies. The contract has an initial term of three years, with two additional option years.

John F. Short, chairman and CEO, said 'This, our third Cancer Registry database contract, clearly establishes the company as one of the pre-eminent sources of public sector registries and databases. Our success in this area is an example of our ability to apply our basic skills in data collection and analysis and to effectively leverage our sophisticated technological infrastructure.'

Short concluded,'While we are finding a strong and growing market for this unique combination of skills in a market we know well, public and private healthcare organisations, ultimately our goal will be to leverage these new service offerings into a broader commercial opportunity.'
