Chameleon, Pulse Train's innovative R&D project, which facilitates the sharing of data and scripts between different data collection and analysis systems, is billed as data migration made easy. Chameleon makes it possible to analyse surveys collected in different data collection packages within Pulsar WEB, without the need for much manual intervention. It provides the possibility of converting from third party scripting languages into QSL, which means that large organisations can share scripts/work without re-writing, and without all having to use the same software package. Chameleon also helps to avoid the many problems linked to data collection in different packages during international jobs, whereby it is a difficult, time- consuming task to merge data before analysis. 'Our aim is to reduce the duplication of specification,' says Pulse Train's Chairman, Geoffrey Roughton. 'Ultimately the idea is to go from a paper questionnaire directly to results on the web. I don't believe you can cut out experienced DP people altogether, but you can certainly make everyone's life a lot easier.' Roughton states that he is 'committed to being open and will describe the methods in detail. Conceptually it could run any system - and we would be willing to work with others wanting to use this technology.'
