US Still Loves NYC | September 8 2003 |
As the second anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center approaches, Americans have once again voted New York their favourite city, according to the Harris Poll. The 'Big Apple' has topped the poll in six of the last seven years, beaten only in 1998 by San Francisco. The remainder of this year's top five are in the west - San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
The dominance of the west makes NYC's top spot all the more notable, although Chicago also ranks fairly highly (no. 6). San Diego was second in 2001 but slipped to eighth place last year.
Among the risers are LA, which has never before been higher than 10th and is now 5th; Las Vegas, which has leapt from fourteenth to fourth [could this be the CASRO Conference effect? - Ed.]; and Phoenix, which was not on the list last year and comes straight in at no.7 this year.
Among the losers are Seattle, which has slipped to 9th equal, having never previously been out of the top 5; Orlando, Florida which slips back down to 12th place after a jump to 4th last year; and Atlanta which slips from fifth place last year to eleventh place this year.
New in the top fifteen this year are Phoenix (7), Honolulu (13=) and Tampa (FL) (15=), replacing Dallas, San Antonio and Ashville (NC). Overall, this year's top 15 includes three cities from the Northeast and Midwest, four from the southeast and eight in the West.
Harris Interactive (r) surveyed 2,215 adults nationwide, online, between July 14 and 20.
