Suspect Arrested in ORC Check Forging Scam
Police in the US have arrested a man in Reno, Nevada and charged him with forging Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) payroll checks.
According to Sgt Scott Dugan, who heads the Reno police financial crimes unit, Roberto Alvira III faked the checks and then cashed them in for at least $10k so that he could pay bills, veterinary expenses and buy alcohol.
Last Thursday, the Reno Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit and members of the Northern Nevada Fraud and Identity Theft Task Force served a search warrant at Alvira's home and seized his check forgery laboratory. This comprised computer equipment and personal identification information.
Dugan said the arrest of two previous suspected counterfeit check manufacturers/cashers had led to this arrest.
More charges may be pending after a forensic check of the computer. Alvira is also charged with possession of a firearm.
