BPM Buy for IBM
Computer and consulting giant IBM has announced plans to buy business process management (BPM) solutions firm Lombardi, as it continues its expansion into the market for business data software.
The deal is subject to approvals and closing conditions and is expected to complete early in 2010. Terms were not disclosed.
The purchase of Lombardi, a privately-held company based in Austin, Texas, will strengthen IBM's own BPM offering, giving it an end-to-end solution in the growing market. Lombardi's service takes a department-level approach, and the firm is expected to join IBM's Application and Integration Middleware/WebSphere division, led by General Manager Craig Hayman.
In addition, Big Blue expects the buy to strengthen its capabilities in service-oriented architecture (SOA), which encourages data sharing and reuse of legacy applications and databases during development work. IBM is placing increasing emphasis on helping clients to make the best use of their existing data, and in October bought predictive analytics leader, SPSS.
