Acrobat Closes Maine Call Center
Canadian-based data collection firm Acrobat Research has temporarily closed its US-based call center in Calais, Maine, making up to 45 employees redundant in the process.
The market research and polling firm opened the center with 30 staff in January 2008, when it announced plans to fill between 200 and 250 full- and part-time jobs in the US.
Almost immediately, lack of business forced the company to close for six weeks in the early spring.
President Tim Sinke says that the center will shut for several weeks and possibly longer, but that there is no guarantee the firm will re-employ any of its former staff if the center reopens at a later date.
Sinke cites a decline in business volume and the poor economy as the reasons behind the closure.
Former Center Manager Jayda Smith told local press that she had to notify 45 full-time workers last Friday that they had been laid off.
