UK Government Reviews Dr Foster's Future

In the UK, the future of public-private partnership Dr Foster Intelligence is under review by the Government, to ensure it provides patients with 'quality information and data' on all aspects of healthcare.

The healthcare research and analytics specialist was launched in 2006 as a joint venture between the NHS Information Centre and Dr Foster Holdings LLP. In July, the NHS Information Centre transferred its share to the Department of Health, which now owns a 48.75% stake in the organisation.

During 2009, Dr Foster Intelligence generated revenues of £22.1m, and acquired Dr Foster Research Limited (DFR) to provide access to a number of growth opportunities outside the NHS, including local government, the independent sector, the pharma industry, and internationally.

The review - which follows publication of white paper 'Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS' - is designed to increase the use of healthcare informatics to create better care, outcomes and reduced costs.

Health Minister Simon Burns said the review will ensure that the Department of Health is 'making the most' of Dr Foster Intelligence.
