Experian Buys Garlik

Global information services giant Experian has acquired UK-based web monitoring firm Garlik. While terms of the deal were not disclosed, Experian said the transaction had been funded from its own existing cash resources.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Nigel ShadboltEstablished in 2005 by the founders of online banks Egg and First Direct, Garlik creates semantic web technologies such as DataPatrol, which captures and monitors information from web and social networking sites, and then generates an alert when an online loss/disclosure or theft of consumer data is detected.

Additionally, Garlik collaborates with a panel of ID protection and technology experts including webfather Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and former British Computer Society President Professor Nigel Shadbolt.

Experian says the acquisition enables it to offer a' more comprehensive' identity protection product, while accelerating plans to expand consumer protection services into new geographies. The acquisition will form part of Experian's Interactive business.

At 31 December 2010 Garlik had gross assets of £637K (US $1m).
