Net Use Shown by Ethnic Group
Nearly 8 million Hispanics are thought to have accessed the Internet last month. This compares to some 6.7 million users during June 2001, making Hispanics the third largest ethnic group currently going online. This is according to new data just released by Nielsen NetRatings
Other findings include the fact that Asian and Pacific users reached nearly 2.4 million individuals in June 2002. Overall, 94 million Caucasian Web surfers accessed the Internet, rising 4 percent year-over-year, while African American users rose three percent to nearly 7.8 million. By comparison, the total Net population rose by three percent year on year to reach 105 million in June.
The new data also shows that the ratio of most ethnic groups online has remained unchanged. This is with the exception of the rocketing Hispanic sector. Caucasians now represent nearly 90 percent of users, while African Americans rank as the second largest group, accounting for 7 percent. Users from Hispanic groups represent 7 percent overall, while Asian Americans account for just 2 percent.
In terms of individual Net sessions undertaken during June 2002, Asian users averaged 26 Internet occasions, spending more than 16 hours per user. They are estimated to have accessed over 1,300 Web pages during that month. At the same time, Caucasian users went online an average of 21 times, spending more than 11 hours online each.
