Patent for Rentrak System Adjusting TV Data
Multi-screen measurement firm Rentrak has been granted a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a method it says statistically adjusts big data from set-top boxes and other transaction data, removing bias.
The new system, awarded U.S. Patent Number 8,543,523, corrects for potential biases in viewing from millions of TV set-top boxes, substituting actual behavioral characteristics from observed data for the age and sex classification previously used to weight projections.
CEO and Vice Chairman Bill Livek says the methodology also has broad reaching applications for databases other than television, and comments: 'this is a problem that has confounded every other company that has tried to invent products from TV set-top boxes, so it is with a great sense of pride that we continue our culture of innovating solutions that are cutting edge and unique to Rentrak.'
The company is online at www.rentrak.com .
