Research as a Life Changing Experience
In an exclusive preview of this year's AQR Trends Day, taking place in London on Friday 29 November, MRWeb takes a look at one of the topical speaker papers designed to throw new light on the industry.
'Research as a life-changing experience' is the subject of the paper due to be presented by Paul Vittles, managing director, RBA Research. Building on his reputation as an industry innovator, Paul will be drawing on his wide-ranging experience to demonstrate how new styles of working and creative management techniques can reap considerable rewards for researchers, clients and respondents alike.
Making all practitioners research managers from Day One of their careers is just one of the enlightened suggestions which Paul will be advocating in his forward-looking paper. He believes that building management and leadership skills are pivotal to maximising the potential of employees and this can only be achieved through making the sense of responsibility real.
Other innovative strategies Paul will propose in his paper include client coaching - helping them to communicate better with their customers, but also to maximise their influence within their own organisations. Paul will offer advice on developing clients' management and leadership skills so they can make better decisions about where research can play a part. He will also address the benefits of life coaching to take client relationships to a higher level.
Paul's paper will highlight case studies from his extensive work among young people, those with disabilities, and tenants living on disadvantaged estates. He will also talk about the lessons learnt whilst leading the sensitive public consultation exercise into deciding the future of 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester. There are lessons here for commercial researchers and social researchers alike.
Other speakers at this year's AQR Trends Day include Charlie Leadbeater, co-founder of Demos, Patricia Shaw, Associate Director of the Complexity and Management Centre at the Business School of the University of Hertfordshire; David Smith, Chairman, DVL Smith and Martin Bontoft, Head of Human Factors at design consultancy IDEO.
