Facebook Opens AI Research Lab in Paris
Facebook has launched an artificial intelligence (AI) research facility in Paris, complementing its existing 'Facebook AI Research' (FAIR) teams in Menlo Park and New York.
Like these other teams, the new Paris squad will work on image recognition research projects, as well as natural language processing, and speech recognition initiatives. Facebook said it chose Paris because it is home to some of the 'best researchers in the world'. The firm has also set up a collaborative agreement with Paris-based research institute INRIA, to offer joint study opportunities for research professionals, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.
In a statement, the company said: 'We think the FAIR Paris team will bring valuable expertise and new perspectives to our work, and we plan to work openly with and invest in the AI research community in France, the EU and beyond as we strive to make meaningful progress in these fields. We believe this open model ultimately spurs more innovation, encourages collaboration and mutual review, and helps us all move faster'.
