Increased Share Trading in Australia
More than half the adult Australian population (51%) now own shares either directly or through a managed fund, according to the annual Share Ownership Study conducted for the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) by Millward Brown Australia.
The study aims to provide the Exchange with an understanding of the different types of 'retail' investor and contributes to the development of its advertising, training and education programmes.
Thirty-nine percent of Australian adults own shares directly, and the average value of shareholdings has increased by 14 percent to $AUD 40,800, according to the study. Share owners traded more frequently in 2003 than the previous year, and half of them say they plan to buy more in the next year.
Millward Brown Australia interviewed a representative national sample of 2,400 adults.
