Foursquare Relaunches Places Database, Debuts API

US-based location intelligence provider Foursquare has re-launched its Places Database, which now contains data from 95 million points of interest (POI); and has launched a new API.

Josh CohenThe database relaunch marks the completion of the combination of Foursquare's data set with that of Factual, with which it merged last year. Foursquare says its redesigned solution encompasses the best aspects of both POI data sets, and also includes billions of photos and information about venues provided through check-ins, tips and reviews posted by the firm's community of app users. Uses of the database include the design of engaging experiences for users, identifying the perfect location for a new brick-and-mortar venue, and conducting market assessments.

The release of the Places Enterprise API supports Foursquare's enterprise-grade location solutions, and follows on from the firm's previous Developer API. the new version promises simple testing of code snippets in the browser, giving developers the ability to experiment before needing to commit changes to their code.

Josh Cohen (pictured), Foursquare's SVP of Product, comments: 'The availability of these two offerings is significant, as more industries are turning to location technology as a necessary ingredient to their technology stack. By evolving the quality of our POI data and creating a delivery method tailored for enterprise use, Places can serve as not only a tool to solve complex business problems but a foundational building block that helps to power an enterprise'.
