CEO Hall Adds Chairman's Role at Gartner

The board of Directors of tech consulting giant Gartner has elected long-time CEO Eugene Hall to the additional role of Chairman, succeeding James Smith who has been Chair for twenty years. The Board has also appointed Karen Dykstra as Lead Independent Director.

At the same time, the board announced it has extended Hall's contract agreement, which previously expired on Dec 31st 2026, for another five years to the end of 2031.

Smith, who will remain on the Board as an independent director, says of Hall's work to date: 'Gene has demonstrated exceptional leadership over the past two decades, and we are incredibly pleased he will serve as our Board Chair to support our continued growth and success. As CEO, Gene has created significant value for our clients and shareholders by driving long-term, sustained, double digit growth. Given his remarkable contributions to the Company as CEO and a director, the Board unanimously elected Gene to take on this role as Gartner accelerates its momentum and enters its next chapter of value creation'. Hall says he is 'honored to serve as Board Chair during this exciting time for our company', and notes: 'Jim's counsel has been invaluable to me over the years, and I look forward to continuing to work closely with him as a director'.

Hall's tenure as CEO to date has indeed been remarkably successful, through periods of general economic boom and recession alike. In 2004 the group had $858 million in revenue, and by 2023 this had grown to $5.9bn, representing around 10.7% revenue growth per annum. Profit of $18 million in 2004 has become EBITDA of $1.5bn in 2023.

Smith says of Dykstra's appointment: 'Since first joining the Board in 2007, Karen has provided valuable perspective and critical insight in the boardroom, and we look forward to continuing to benefit from her expertise in finance and tech leadership'.
