New Name and Format for Census Bureau's HPS
The US Census Bureau is to transition its Household Pulse Survey to a new longitudinal design. The Bureau aims to make the survey, launched in April 2020 as a means of getting rapid information about the economic impact of Covid, less burdensome and better able to measure change over time.
Phase 4.2 of the HPS will be its last in the current form, with data due for release on October 3rd: in January 2025 it will be relaunched as the Household Trends and Outlook Pulse Survey (HTOPS), using a panel design comparable to surveys like the Survey of Income and Program Participation. This 'will continue to address the need for timely data and ensure long-term sustainability', according to the Bureau. HTOPS will provide a platform for conducting research in support of the Decennial Census such as the Census Barriers, Attitudes and Motivators Survey (CBAMS) and household survey programs.
