Changing China
Another 'cultural revolution' is sweeping China, according to US-based ABI Research. Instead of LRBs (Little Red Books) this one is fuelled by HDTVs, MP3s and other media devices.
Two new reports, 'TV, DVD Player and PVR Market Trends in China' and 'The Chinese Portable Audio and Video Market in Transition' provide detailed market and potential assessments, defining opportunities for vendors and content providers.
ABI says high-end TVs are gradually replacing CRT TVs in China and the MP3 player is replacing the traditional CD player as the mainstream audio device. However, 2004 was 'a disastrous year for domestic DVD player makers' due to high patent fees and falling prices, and the market is confused by the emergence of three high definition disc standards, EVD, HVD and HDV - EVD was authorized last month as the recommended national standard. In addition, player makers for all three standards face a severe shortage of movie content in their domestic formats.
