Index to Measure the 'Public Mind'
California News Tech has introduced a new index to measure how companies are portrayed in the media and perceived by the public. The aim is to provide investors and others with up-to-date information about a company's reputation.
The tool, MediaSentiment, rates news about a company using a software program that classifies certain words and phrases as positive, negative or neutral. It tracks stories from more than 6,500 media web pages that cover national TV newscasts, 100 daily newspapers, 30 local TV stations, and 6,000 news sections from corporate web sites.
Marian Munz, President and CEO of California News Tech, says the tool was developed to measure the 'public mind', and can provide subscribers with an evaluation of news stories within seconds of their publication. 'Most investors have to wait until the morning paper or the evening news to hear about lost earnings or a patent issued,' says Munz, 'so they probably miss the opportunity to buy or sell stock.'
