Yankee Group Launches Wireless Forecast
The US-based Yankee Group has introduced a five-year projection and analysis of the business and consumer wireless markets. The Global Wireless/Mobile Premium Forecast provides data for unique users in 23 nations across North America, Latin America, EMEA and Asia Pacific, using data from the Group's Mobile User and Video-Capable Device Surveys.
The forecast gives details of the numbers of users for different applications - such as text messaging, email, IM, ringtones and gaming - and the average revenue per user. Since so many users have more than one wireless device, it provides data for unique users.
The company predicts that global mobile services will be used by 36% of the population by 2009, with a global revenue of $698bn. The penetration varies from 80% in Europe to less than 20% in the Middle East and Africa.
It also forecasts that 2009 will see text-messaging revenue exceed $36bn, and that ringtone revenue to carriers and content providers will be almost US$28bn.
Yankee's Director for Global Telecom and Wireless Services Erica Fox states that, as competition intensifies, 'players in the wireless market need ever more granular data to truly size and predict opportunity growth'.
The forecast forms part of the Group's Decision Instruments tools. Yankee Group is online at www.yankeegroup.com.
