Researchers Doing 'Odd Job'

Ethnographer and MR columnist Hy Mariampolski and his co-MD Sharon Wolf, of QualiData Research Inc., are featured in a book of 'Unusual Occupations' just published in the US. A taxidermist and an expert in dinosaur dung also feature.

Odder Jobs: More Portraits of Unusual Occupations by photo essayist Nancy Rica Schiff, is published by Ten Speed Press (www.tenspeed.com ) and contains sixty-five portraits of people performing interesting and unique occupations, intended to 'open our eyes to a whole unexpected world of work.'

Ethnography, discussed in a recent MRWho interview with Intel's Ken Anderson (www.mrweb.com/drno/frm-intel.htm ), finds itself in the exalted company of Mushroom Dealing, Taxidermy, Paleoscatology (the study of Dinosaur dung) and Dog Food Testing, among others.

Mariampolski and Wolf have been described as 'America's Leading Corporate Voyeurs' and work for corporations including Microsoft, Georgia-Pacific, Colgate, Moen, Barilla, GSK and Michelin, using the structured observation of consumers' everyday lives to uncover opportunities for innovation. Their work is described in Mariampolski's book, Ethnography for Marketers: A Guide to Consumer Immersion (Sage Publications www.sagepub.com ).
