Nielsen Drops the Remote

From the end of the year, Nielsen Media Research will no longer collect data on remote control ownership in households in its metered panels. The ratings giant says 96% of its US sample have a remote control device and most new sets now come with one.

'Reporting this household characteristic in our reports and systems is not as relevant as when this technology was first introduced,' Nielsen explained in a client notice. 'Not reporting on remote control will enable us to report on another, more relevant technology in the future.'

The firm, which has been reporting on television audiences since 1950, each day processes more than 10 million minutes of TV viewing data.

Nielsen recently announced a collaboration with TV sports network ESPN to develop a model to measure consumers' use of media across TV, the Internet and digital mobile devices (www.mrweb.com/drno/news7458.htm ).
