China is the third largest Asia-Pacific MR market in terms of revenue - after Japan and Australia. In 2004, the market grew at four times the regional and global average.
Despite this, there is still plenty of room for more growth. Currently, the MR spend per capita is just $0.28, compared with $10.14 in Japan. $9.76 in Hong Kong, and $40 in the UK.
China has more than 30,000 organisations registered as market research institutions. They fall into one of three types, as follows:
- Leading foreign market research firms such as Gallup, Gartner, and SGR. These companies began to enter the Chinese market in the 1990s, when large international firms began to establish business in China.
- State-owned market research enterprises - often the subsidiary of state or provincial statistics bureau, with the advantage of survey resources across cities and lower service charges. Some state-owned market researchers have co-operated with larger foreign-owned companies.
- Small privately owned Chinese market research companies.

The China Marketing Research Association (CMRA) was established last year. Under the auspices of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), it is in charge of drafting rules and regulations and codes of conduct for the nation's market research industry.
