US electronics market research specialist IMS Research has acquired recently founded Young Market Research (YMR), which provides marketing intelligence and consulting in the solar, solid-state lighting and display industries. Terms were undisclosed.
YMR was launched in June by father and son team Barry and Ross Young, who previously set up flat panel display market research firm DisplaySearch, which they sold to the NPD Group in 2005.
Founded in the 1980s, IMS employs 75 analysts in Austin, US; London, UK; and Shanghai, China, who provide clients with research into the electronics industry and other sectors.
IMS SVP and Head of US Operations Ian Weightman explained: 'This strategic acquisition enables us to move strongly into the displays research area, which was one of the few gaps in our portfolio. It will also help us to consolidate our positions in the photovoltaic (PV) and solid-state lighting markets.'
As part of the transaction, Ross Young will head IMS Research's new Displays Research Division and act as a Principle Analyst in the PV sector, while his father will work on a variety of IMS projects.
Weightman said that bringing their knowledge and experience into IMS will enable his firm to develop new products and services that will help it achieve its aggressive growth targets.
