Retail information provider The NPD Group has opened a Beijing office and launched a service tracking sales of prestige beauty products in China, covering the fragrance, make-up, and skincare businesses.
Edward Wang is named as Manager of the firm's beauty business in China, overseeing sales, client development, and operations. He worked previously as a consultant to NPD and has more than 10 years experience in the research industry.
The firm already runs similar trackers in the US, France, and Italy. The Chinese data will be compiled from a leader panel of 32 stores in six cities, with plans to expand to more than 50 department stores in 10 cities next year.
Subscribers to the new service will receive quarterly reports with monthly breakouts of sales volume and market share at the category, brand, and product level available from January 2007; with item-level information available for select products.
'Business opportunities in China are exploding, particularly in the luxury goods market' comments Soizick Porte, Director of Business Development for NPD. Claude Charbit, NPD President, Global Beauty, says the firm is 'committed to continuing to serve our beauty clients with global information services' and that the launch represents 'an important step forward' towards worldwide coverage.
