AGB Nielsen has announced it will be measuring the size of TV audiences of the Beijing Olympic Games in 38 countries on five continents.
In addition to its international role, the agency - which began measuring TV audiences in China in 2005 in a few urban areas of the country - also measures audiences in 12 provinces and municipalities of China, covering a total of 660 million people.
The company will release data by province, and Management Board Chairman Dr Alberto Colussi believes that data gathered from non-urban areas will be especially valuable, as the Chinese countryside has not been studied in detail before: 'If you have only urban data, you have only a little vision. You don't see what's around. And that was a limitation.'
'This is quite a challenge for our company,' Colussi added. 'But it is a challenge that we have faced in previous years and have resolved successfully.' The firm measured audience size during the Athens games in 2004 and the Sydney games in 2000.
AGB Nielsen, a joint venture between The Nielsen Company and the AGB Group, operates as a separate individual company, employing approximately 2100 TAM (Television Audience Measurement) professionals worldwide.
