Eye Tracking Firm Unveils Off-the-Shelf Option

Swedish firm Tobii Technology has introduced what it describes as 'the world's first off-the-shelf eye tracking system for integration', at the CeBIT expo in Hanover this week.

The Tobii Eye Tracker IS (Integrated System) is sold off the shelf to volume customers for integration into a range of different applications, meeting market requirements for smaller size, embedded processing, lower power consumption and scalability, according to the firm, which will customise and provide integration expertise as required.

Just over a month ago, Tobii signed a global agreement with Ipsos Marketing, to integrate its products into Ipsos' Pack Evaluation packaged testing system and other solutions.

Eye tracking technology measures a person's point of gaze, i.e. where they are looking, and/or their eye or head position. The new product boasts gaze point, eye/head position and pupil size data, and Tobii says its performance can be relied on in volume applications 'to work on basically anyone without any restrictions on the user or the slightest compromise in tracking quality'.

This week's launch means lower investment costs and shorter development time for companies wishing to add eye tracking capabilities to their products - examples are arcade gaming machines, medical instruments, vehicles, market research set-top boxes and information kiosks, 3D displays, law enforcement & security. Tobii says its devices are already used by thousands of people with Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS and other disabilities, to communicate without using their voices or hands.
