An Introduction to Tuvalu
Formerly known as the Ellice Islands, Tuvalu is a Polynesian island nation located half way between Australia and Hawaii, comprising four reef islands and five atolls. It is the world's third least populated independent country (behind Vatican City and Nauru) and in area the fourth smallest (same two plus Monaco). The Ellice islands were administered by Britain as part of a protectorate from 1892 to 1974, latterly (from 1916) as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. Tuvalu became fully independent in 1978.
