Officially the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, PNG is a country in the south-western Pacific Ocean that occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and many offshore islands. It is one of the most diverse countries on Earth, counting over 850 indigenous languages and at least as many traditional societies in a population of just under six million.
Papua New Guinea gained independence from Australia (the de facto metropolitan power) on September 16, 1975. Richly endowed with natural resources, it has been hampered by rugged terrain, the high cost of developing infrastructure, serious law and order problems and a complex system of land title.

According to the CIA World Factbook, Papua New Guinea's primary export commodities consist of oil, gold, copper ore, logs, palm oil, coffee, cocoa, crayfish and prawns, with exports totaling $USD 5.658bn in 2008. Main export partners are Australia, Japan and China. Imports to PNG in 2008 totaled $USD 3.103bn, and consisted of machinery and transport equipment, manufactured goods, food, fuels and chemicals. Imports came from Australia, Singapore, China and Japan.
Key industries in Papua New Guinea include copra crushing, palm oil processing, plywood production, wood chip production, mining (gold, silver and copper), crude oil production, petroleum refining, construction and tourism.
