The Lao People's Democratic Republic is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, tracing its history to the Kingdom of Lan Xang or Land of a Million Elephants, which existed from the 14th to the 18th century. After a period as a French protectorate, it gained independence in 1949.
In the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese Army occupied part of the east of Laos as a staging ground and supply route, and in 1975, the communist Pathet Lao, backed by this army and the Soviet Union, overthrew the royalist government: King Savang Vatthana later died in captivity.

According to the CIA World Factbook, the main exports of Laos ($1.033bn 2008) are wood products, coffee, electricity, tin, copper and gold. The main partners for exports are Thailand, Vietnam, China and South Korea. Imports ($1.278bn 2008) consist of machinery and equipment, vehicles, fuel and consumer goods, and come from Thailand, China and Vietnam.
