Officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (from the Arabic 'Mamlakat al Bahrayn' - Kingdom of the Two Seas), this is a small island nation made up of an archipelago of thirty-three islands in the Persian Gulf and ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family who captured the country from the Persians in 1783. In order to secure these holdings, it entered into a series of treaties with the UK during the 19th century that made Bahrain a British protectorate. Bahrain's small size and central location among Persian Gulf countries require it to play a delicate balancing act in foreign affairs among its larger neighbours. Facing a decline in the oil reserves which are the source of its wealth, Bahrain has turned to petroleum processing and refining and has transformed itself into an international banking centre.

Research Industry
Bahrain has no MR association and no locally-based research providers as far as we know.According to the CIA World Factbook, Bahrain exported $USD 12.65 billion worth of goods in 2009. Exports comprised petroleum and petroleum products, aluminum, textiles, and went principally to India, and Saudi Arabia.
Imports in the same year were worth $USD 10.95 billion, consisting of crude oil, machinery, chemicals, mostly from Saudi Arabia, France, US, China, South Korea, Japan, Germany and the UK.
