An Introduction to Bahrain

Officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (from the Arabic 'Mamlakat al Bahrayn' - Kingdom of the Two Seas), this is a small island nation made up of an archipelago of thirty-three islands in the Persian Gulf and ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family who captured the country from the Persians in 1783. In order to secure these holdings, it entered into a series of treaties with the UK during the 19th century that made Bahrain a British protectorate. The archipelago attained its independence in 1971. See full country profile.

This other Eden? Shajarat al-Hayah (The Tree of Life) is a 400-year-old tree in Bahrain that is considered a natural wonder. This unique tree stands alone in the desert about 1.2 miles from the highest point in Bahrain. How this tree remains alive is a mystery - it is in a place that has no natural water supply. The longevity of the tree, and the mystery surrounding it, has led to local legend suggesting that the tree sits on the site of the Garden of Eden.

Bahrain in Profile

Officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (from the Arabic 'Mamlakat al Bahrayn' - Kingdom of the Two Seas), this is a small island nation made up of an archipelago of thirty-three islands in the Persian Gulf and ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family who captured the country from the Persians in 1783. The archipelago attained its independence in 1971.

Bahrain's small size and central location among Persian Gulf countries require it to play a delicate balancing act in foreign affairs among its larger neighbours. Facing a decline in the oil reserves which are the source of its wealth, Bahrain has turned to petroleum processing and refining and has transformed itself into an international banking centre.
