An Introduction to Jordan

Since the seventh century, the area that is now officially known as The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has been ruled almost constantly by Muslim and Arab cultures. One exception was the early-mid twentieth century when it fell under British rule - but this led to Jordan's establishment as an autonomous state, gaining independence on 25th May 1946. Wadi you Know ? Wadi Rum (also known as The Valley of the Moon) is a large wadi (or valley) in the south of Jordan. It is perhaps best known as the base used by T E Lawrence during the Arab Revolt of 1917 - 18. Because of this connection, one of the rock formations on the site is named The Seven Pillars of Wisdom after Lawrence's semi-autobiographical book. Much of the David Lean film Lawrence of Arabia was filmed in Wadi Rum.

Overview of Trade and Industry

Jordan's economy is among the smallest in the Middle East, with insufficient supplies of water, oil, and other natural resources, underlying the government's heavy reliance on foreign assistance. Other economic challenges for the government include chronic high rates of poverty, unemployment, inflation, and a large budget deficit.

Since assuming the throne in 1999, King ABDALLAH has implemented significant economic reforms, such as opening the trade regime, privatizing state-owned companies, and eliminating most fuel subsidies, which in the past few years have spurred economic growth by attracting foreign investment and creating some jobs.

Jordan's financial sector has been relatively isolated from the international financial crisis because of its limited exposure to overseas capital markets. Jordan is currently exploring nuclear power generation to forestall energy shortfalls.
