An Introduction to Eritrea
The history of Eritrea is tied to its strategic position on the Red Sea littoral, with a coastline that extends more than 1,000 km, making it prey to various sets of invaders and colonizers. In the period following the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, when European powers scrambled for territory in Africa, Italy invaded and occupied Eritrea. During WWII, Commonwealth forces expelled those of Italy, leaving the country under British administration until it was federated with Ethiopia in 1950. After a 30 year war with Ethiopia, Eritrea gained full independence and international recognition in 1993. See full country profile.Latest Research News from Africa

Eritrea is a single-party state. Though its constitution, adopted in 1997, stipulates that the state is a presidential republic with a unicameral (single chamber) parliamentary democracy, it has yet to be implemented. In 1998 a border dispute with Ethiopia led to the Eritrean-Ethiopian War. The war resulted in the death of about 135,000 Ethiopians and 19,000 Eritreans. In 2009 the UN imposed sanctions on Eritrea after accusing it of backing anti-Ethiopian Islamist insurgents in Somalia.

Research Industry
Eritrea has no MR association and no locally-based research providers as far as we know.Exports from Eritrea were worth $25 million in 2010 - made up of livestock, food and various other manufactures, largely to Asian and European countries. Imports were worth much more at $738 million comprising of machinery, petroleum, food and oth'r manufactures coming from a number of countries in Asia and Europe.
Like many other African nations, the economy of Eritrea is largely based on subsistence agriculture - 80% of the population are involved in farming and herding. In recent history, the economy has been badly affected by the Eritrean-Ethiopian war - in the region of $600m of property damage and losses, including livestock and homes.
