An Introduction to Burundi
A landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of Africa, the Republic of Burundi (as we know it now) formed five centuries ago, occupied by the Twa, Tutsi and Hutu peoples. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the area was occupied by Germany and then Belgium. Burundi gained independence in 1959, but social differences between the Tutsi and Hutu led to political unrest, civil war and ultimately the genoc'de of up to 100,000 Hutu. Acts of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity remain unpunished. See full country profile.Latest Research News from Africa

Between 2006 and 2008, efforts to rebuild Burundi were held back by repeated clashes between the government and the FLN (Forces for National Liberation), the latter using child soldiers and attacking civilians, according to Amnesty International. Since a ceasefire in 2008, Burundi's President and the leader of the FLN continue to negotiate for peace. Currently, 450,000 refugees have returned to Burundi as camps close down. The economy of the country is on its knees - it has the lowest per capita gross income in the world.

Due to its unfortunate recent history, its geographical situation and the prevalence of AIDS, Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Approximately 80% of the population live in poverty.
Agriculture is the main industry and coffee makes up 93% of the country's exports. There is also thought to be some promise in mineral deposits.
Burundi is part of the East African Community and a potential member of the planned East African Federation.
