Officially the Union of the Comoros, this is an archipelago nation located in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa. Comoros has a colourful history as a nation formed at the crossroads of many civilisations and has African, French, Arab and Indian Ocean influences and affiliations.
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to contact the islands, in 1505. They changed hands many times until becoming a French colony in 1912, and the island of Mayotte remains French-administered having voted against independence in 1975. The 30 years since have seen a total of 20 coups d'ãtat in the three other islands, including seven attempts to overthrow one president. In addition, French-trained gendarme Colonel Mohammed Bacar ruled the Island of Anjouan independently from 2001 till 2008 before fleeing in a speedboat.Grande Comore, the largest of the islands, boasts the largest active volcano in the world, Mt Karthala, which destroyed a number of villages as recently as 2005.

Research Industry
Comoros has no MR association and no locally-based research providers as far as we know. If you know better, please do get in touch.Comoros is one of the world's poorest countries. Economic growth and poverty reduction are major priorities for the government. With a rate of 14.3%, unemployment is considered very high. Agriculture, including fishing, hunting and forestry, is the leading sector of the economy, and 38.4% of the working population is employed in primary industry.
Observers fear that high population densities and a high rate of population growth may lead to an environmental crisis in the near future. A mostly rural, agricultural economy supports as many as 1000 people per square kilometre in the densest agricultural zones. Comoros' real GDP growth was a low 1.9% in 2004 with real GDP per capita declining continually. Factors in this include declining investment, drops in consumption, rising inflation, and a growing trade imbalance due in part to lowered cash crop prices, especially for vanilla.
