The Spanish explorer, Alvaro de Mendana de Neira first sighted the islands in 1758. He found signs of alluvial gold, and believed that he had found the source of King Solomon's wealth, naming the islands accordingly. The Spanish explorer, Alvaro de Mendana de Neira first sighted the islands in 1758. He found signs of alluvial gold, and believed that he had found the source of King Solomon's wealth, naming the islands accordingly. The continuing slave trade in the Solomon Islands prompted the UK to declare a protectorate over the region in 1893.
The islands achieved full independence in 1978 and are mainly supported by a subsistence economy. The state derives much of its income from exporting primary goods, such as timber, palm oil, fish, copra, and gold.

Religions The religion of Solomon Islands is about 97% Christian with following denominations: the Anglican Church of Melanesia 32.8%, Roman Catholic 19%, South Seas Evangelical Church 17%, Seventh-day Adventist 11.2%, United Church 10.3%, Christian Fellowship Church 2.4%, other Christian 4.4%. The remaining 2.9% practice indigenous religious beliefs and other faiths such as the Bah'í Faith.
