An Introduction to Kiribati
Kiribati, officially the Repulic of Kiribati, is a tropical island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. It spreads over 1,351,000 square miles, straddles the equator and borders the International Date Line to the East. 'Kiribati' is the local pronunciation of 'Gilberts', derived from the main Island chain, the Gilbert Islands - named after Thomas Gilbert who first sighted the islands in 1788. Britain made the islands a protectorate in 1892, together with the Ellis Islands, and gave independence to the latter as Tuvalu in 1978 and the former as Kiribati on July 12th, 1979. The remote Line Islands were used for nuclear testing in the late 1960s. See full country profile.Latest Research News from Kiribati

Trade and Industry in Kiribati
There is a modern adage that says 'you're never too far from a Starbucks', and anyone who has ever walked down Oxford Street could attest to that. Even in Kiribati, this is the case - one of their islands is called 'Starbuck Island'. We have yet to find out, however, if they serve a skinny mocha latte with a cinnamon twist. We hope not.
