First sighted by Alvaro de Mendana de Neira in 1595, they were renamed the Harvey Islands by Captain Cook in 1773, and renamed in the latter's honour fifty years later by the Russian explorer Adam Johann von Krusenstern. The islands became a British protectorate in 1888, were annexed to New Zealand in 1901, and in 1965 chose the current arrangement, which also gives New Zealand responsibility for defence at the islands' request.
