An Introduction to New Zealand
New Zealand, in addition to its main landmasses, the North and South Islands, comprises numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. The indigenous Maori named New Zealand Aotearoa, commonly translated as The Land of the Long White Cloud. New Zealand became part of the British Empire in 1840, decided against joining the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901 and became a separate dominion in 1907, two years after its rugby team toured England and became known as the All Blacks.
