The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia with a population of over 14 million people. It is the successor state of the Hindu and Buddhist Khmer Empire, which ruled most of the Indochinese Peninsula between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries.
Cambodia was a protectorate of France from 1863 to 1953, when it gained its independence, at which point the country became a constitutional monarchy. It was briefly invaded by the USA during the Vietnam war - but by far the darkest moments in the nation's history came courtesy of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, who attempted to rebuild the country's agriculture on the model of the 11th Century while discarding western medicine, and destroying temples and libraries. Between one and three million Cambodians died in the 'killing fields'. After a Vietnamese invasion in 1978, a peace settlement in 1991 has led to stability, briefly shaken by a coup d'ãtat in 1997. It has seen double-digit economic growth, and seeks foreign business investment to modernise the nation and eliminate poverty.
