Political isolation, resentment over harsh treatment of the south and central planning hindered recovery until reforms were announced in 1986. Its economic growth has been among the highest in the world in the past decade, culminating in Vietnam joining the WTO in 2007 and the UN Security Council, as a non-permanent member, in 2008.

Vietnam's MR industry is the world's 52nd biggest with a turnover of $USD 25m in 2008 - $USD 0.29 per capita and 5.4% of ad spend in the same year of $USD 454m ($USD 5.26 per capita).
45% of MR spend is in the Manufacturing sector; 60% is consumer research and 65% is quantitative; 25% is international. Split by method, 50% of research carried out is ad hoc, 10% omnibus, 10% panel, 20% other continuous and 10% 'other'.
