Russia is ranked 16th in the world in MR market size, with a turnover of US$335m in 2008 (US$2.36 per capita), 3.9% of ad spend of $8,673m, or $61.08 per capita. 60% of Russia's MR business is from domestic clients, and 75% is consumer focused.
Almost half (49%) of research is focused in manufacturing, with utilities and media each accounting for another 10%.

Exports from Russia were worth $US 303.4bn in 2009, and were made up of petroleum and petroleum products, natural gas, grain, wood products, metals, chemicals, and a wide variety of civilian and military manufactures. Main export partners were Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Ukraine, China and Poland.
Imports for the same period were worth $US 191.8bn, consisting of vehicles, machinery and equipment, plastics, medicines, iron and steel, consumer goods, meat, fruits and nuts and semi finished metal products. Primary import partners were China, Germany, Japan, Ukraine, USA and Italy.

That's why demands of our internal Russian-based clients now involve more basic methods and simple research approaches, compared to more sophisticated European and US clients. Marketing research as an academic discipline is now included in many MBA programs, but is not taught on an undergraduate level.
The structure of the industry is very Moscow centered. About 90% of large Russian companies interested and budgeting (!) for research are headquartered in Moscow & St. Petersburg. These are mainly telecommunication companies, banks, insurance companies and beer manufacturers. Research industry follows this trend - many agencies working directly with clients are located in Moscow, and regional agencies mainly get involved in data collection step.
True researcher in Russia is the one eager to explore, learn and always have fun! Living and working in a research company in Ekaterinburg would not have been so interesting and rewarding if it was to for the team activities that our group loves to take.
The climate indeed creates the opportunities: from minus 30 Celsius in winter to plus 30 in July and August. Lots of forests, parks and rivers around the city provide endless opportunities.
