Georgia reached the peak of its economic and political strength during the 11th and 12th centuries. It was annexed by the Russian Empire in the 19th century and apart from a brief period from 1917 to 1921 did not regain its independence until 1991.
As with many other post-communist countries, Georgia suffered an extended period of civil unrest during the 1990s, culminating in the Rose Revolution which resulted in democratic reform in the country. Tourism is becoming an increasingly significant part of Georgia's economy. A million tourists bought USD13 million to the country in 2006. Tourist attractions include more than 2000 mineral springs and four UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Imports for the same period were worth $4.298, consisting of fuels, vehicles, machinery and parts, grain and other foods, pharmaceuticals.
