An Introduction to Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan (officially the Republic of Azerbaijan) is one of the six independent Turkic states in the Caucasus region of Eurasia. Associated with the spread of Zoroastrianism around 550 BC, the area was ruled by various Persian and Turkish families and conquerors and achieved independence only briefly in 1918, and then on the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991. There followed a territorial war with Armenia over the province of Nagorno-Karabakh which Azerbaijan lost after some 30,000 deaths. See full country profile.Latest Research News from Central Asia

Azerbaijan has been a trail blazer in the Caucasus and in 1918 was the first Muslim nation to grant women the same political rights as men (preceding the United Kingdom and the United States). Baku University was the first modern university to be founded in this region and in 2008, Azerbaijan was cited as one of the top 10 reformers by the World Bank's Doing Business report.

According to the CIA World Factbook: Italy, the USA, Israel, India and France are Azerbaijan's main expor' partners, with exports totalling an estimated $13.6 billion in 2009. The main commodities are oil and gas (accounting for 90% of all exports), machinery, cotton and foodstuffs.
The main import partners are Turkey, Russia, Germany, Ukraine, China and the UK, with imports of machinery and equipment, oil products, foodstuffs, metals and chemicals totalling around $5.4 billion in 2009.
Two thirds of the country is rich in natural oil and gas, as well as a variety of minerals and precious metals. Western oil companies are able to tap deepwater oilfields untouched by the Soviet exploitation, so Azerbaijan is considered one of the most important spots in the world for oil exploration and development.
