Pacific island nation The Republic of Palau gained its independence on 1st October 1994 via an agreement with the USA, which remains responsible for its defense for 50 years and has until now given it direct financial assistance of around US$27m a year.
Situated some 500 miles east of the Philippines and 2,000 miles south of Tokyo, Palau's economy is based on tourism, subsistence agriculture and fishing. Its GDP, bolstered by the US subsidy, is one of the region's highest.

Tourism: The number of visitors 75% of whom come from Taiwan, Japan, and the U.S, exceeded 86,000 in 2005. Tourist spending in Palau was $66m in 2002 and $62m in 2006 (various sources).

Growth: Nominal GDP increased by an annual average of nearly 14% from 1983 to 1990, and by an annual rate of over 10% from 1991 to 1997.Rebounding after the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the economy grew by 5.4% (FCO / Wikipedia).
Free trade area: Palau is a member of the Pacific Island Forum and as such is part of the recently approved Umbrella Agreement including Australia and New Zealand, called the 'Pacific Agreement on Closer Economic Relations' (PACER). This agreement includes the future creation of the 'PICTA' free trade area amongst the 14 ACP Forum Island Countries (FICs), without Australia and New Zealand. Source: BBC.
