In the UK, neuroscientist Annette Thomas has been named Chief Executive Officer of Guardian Media Group (GMG), publisher of the Guardian newspaper. She will take up her new role on 2 March, at which point interim CEO Anna Bateson will return to her role as Chief Customer Officer.Washington DC-born Thomas (pictured) joins with a 25-year background spent leading publishing and data analytics businesses. Most recently, she served as CEO of Clarivate-owned data, analytics and software business Web of Science Group, before being named President of Clarivate's Science Group. Prior to this, she spent more than two decades at publisher Macmillan, where she latterly worked as Chief Science Officer for Springer Nature, having earlier been CEO of Macmillan Publishers and Macmillan Science and Education. A scientist by training, Thomas began her career as an editor at the journal Nature.
Commenting on the appointment, GMG Board Chair Neil Berkett said: 'Annette is a highly experienced leader of mission-driven businesses. She has consistently delivered sustainable growth through deep engagement with end-users, championing innovative new business models with more open access to content and data, and building diverse and inclusive management teams. All of this makes her the ideal person to lead the next phase of GMG's evolution in partnership with our editor-in-chief Katharine Viner.'
