Former NatCen CEO Among New Statistics Authority NEDs

The UK Statistics Authority has appointed three new Non-Executive Director members (NEDs), including former NatCen CEO Penny Young. Each will serve a four-year term, ending on 12th February 2027.

Penny YoungThe new NEDs were recommended by an assessment panel led by the Authority's Chair, Sir Robert Chote after an open competition regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. Young (pictured) was until recently the Librarian and MD of Research and Information at the House of Commons, where she oversaw research services for MPs. Prior to this she was NatCen CEO, BBC Head of Audiences, and Research Director at consumer campaigner Which? Earlier in her career she spent three years at the Office of National Statistics.

Dr Jacob Abboud also joins as a NED, while serving as Managing Partner of financial services sector consultancy Petraenovus, and after previous Board-level positions at Legal & General, Allianz Insurance and AXA UK & Ireland. The third new NED is Professor Dame Carol Propper, an economist and expert in workforce and health statistics, who currently serves as Professor of Economics at Imperial College Business School in London and Monash University in Melbourne.

The three new recruits replace Helen Boaden, Anne Trefethen and Jonathan Haskel, while Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter, Chair of the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication at Cambridge University, has been re-appointed to the Board for a second three-year term from 27th May this year. Sir Robert comments: 'I am delighted to welcome Jacob, Carol and Penny to the Authority's Board, and to have David re-appointed. Together we are determined to ensure that the system delivers for the public good at a time of great opportunity and challenge'.
