Social media intelligence and analytics group Meltwater will benefit from a $65m investment from Norwegian private equity firm Verdane, which takes an 11% stake in the company as a result - valuing Meltwater at around $592m.Meltwater analyses around 1 billion online documents each day for clients in PR and marketing roles. In the last few years the company has acquired AI start-up DeepReason.ai, business information crowd-sourcing company Owler, and Linkfluence, a social media analysis firm. The firm was traded on the Norwegian stock exchange but was taken private in February when it accepted an acquisition offer from private equity vehicle MW Investment BV. In May, it launched three AI-powered tools for video analysis, consumer and market insights, and writing assistance.
Verdane's investment is technically in Fountain Venture, a company controlled by the founder and current Chairman of Meltwater, Jørn Lyseggen, and Verdane intends to work with Fountain to make future funding available to start-ups in areas like AI. The money also brings Verdane a stake in another Fountain company, HR firm Jobylon, but the latter has around 1% of the revenue of Meltwater.
Meltwater has around 2,200 employees, is led by CEO John Box (pictured) and is online at www.meltwater.com .
