UKOM - the UK Online Measurement Company - has appointed former BMRB researcher Jeremy Smythe as General Manager, replacing Peter Bowman who left the role in January.UKOM is a cross-industry organisation set up to specify and oversee the measurement of online audiences. It is run by the IAB and AOP representing media owners, with oversight by ISBA on behalf of advertisers and IPA on behalf of agencies.
Smythe, who currently owns market research consultancy Culture of Insight, took up the post of UKOM Operations Manager in February.
Before launching his own company, he was Head of Sports Research at BMRB, prior to which he served as Head of Market Research at GCap, Associate Director at Carat, and Project Manager at the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB).
While continuing to run his own consultancy, at UKOM Smythe will oversee day-to-day responsibilities such as marketing and industry communications, as well as working with Nielsen on the UKOM Audience Planning System (APS) - the organisation's recently launched online audience measurement system.
'James has been assisting me on UKOM since the beginning of 2010 and has already proved himself an absolutely crucial part of the team,' stated UKOM Chairman, Douglas McArthur. 'He has a mix of serious research expertise and great understanding of how agencies work, making him an excellent Manager for UKOM.'
Bowman, a veteran of joint industry initiatives including the NRS and BARB, became General Manager of JICIMS in 2007, before the organisation evolved into UKOM. Since leaving, he has been working as an independent media planning and research consultant.
