Apple has closed down its social media analysis and tracking firm Topsy, exactly two years after acquiring the San Francisco-based business in a $200m+ deal.Founded in 2008, Topsy offered a real-time search engine, which indexed and ranked search results based on the most influential social media conversations about each specific term, topic, page or domain queried. In addition, the firm measured the influence of Twitter users from data such as historical retweets.
Topsy announced the closure in a tweet, and its web site now redirects to an Apple support page. While it is not clear what Apple has done with Topsy's software and staff, press commentators say the URL redirect suggests its technology may have been folded into iOS 9's Search feature.
