February 28 2025

Online visibility management platform Semrush has appointed William (Bill) R. Wagner as CEO, effective March 10th, replacing co-founder Oleg Shchegolev, who moves to the role of CTO. The firm also reported full year 2024 revenue up 22.5% to $376.8m.

Semrush logoHeadquartered in Boston, USA, Semrush offers clients SEO, advertising, content, social media and competitive research campaigns from one platform / interface, as well as measurement and optimization of their digital ad campaigns across various channels. Last July, it made an unspecified strategic investment in researcher MFour, and in September its clickstream data subsidiary Datos partnered with MFour to combine products based on analysis of browsing behavior with first-party panel-based consumer insights. Semrush also owns competitive intelligence automation specialist Kompyte.

Wagner brings more than thirty years' experience in the technology sector, and has served on Semrush's Board since September 2022. Previous roles include CEO of remote work and support technology company GoTo Group, COO at Vocus and CMO at Fiberlink, having begun his career at AT&T.

'Bill has been one of my closest advisors since joining the Board nearly three years ago, and I've had the pleasure of collaborating with him as we've built out the leadership team, grown the company, and become more profitable' says Shchegolev. 'He has deep experience scaling software companies through both product-led growth and enterprise sales motions, and I'm confident he is the right person to drive the next phase of growth at Semrush. This move also allows me to focus 100% of my time on my passion to leverage AI, drive innovation and expand our product offerings'.
